We have repaired and restored dozens of homes, cabins, and other log structures throughout the Midwest. Logs needing replacement can be matched using the same method and building style and precision as the original building. All replacement and repairs are done with treated or cedar logs so they will never need repair again.
To spot a rotting log use a hammer and walk each logs full length, tapping on it. Don’t forget to tap on the logs directly below the windows or near decks. They are one of the first ones to show signs of rotting. If there is a bad spot you will hear a different/hollow sound. This is not always a fool proof way to locate rotted logs, but it works 90% of the time. Once a problem log is located, place a piece of masking tape to mark it for repair.
Log ends or crowns as they are called are also spots for log rot, especially if they stick out past the overhangs of the house. Water splashing off from the roof onto the top log starts a waterfall effect that can cause the whole corner to rot. Sometimes you can see them going bad from the hollow spots forming in the log ends. Another method is to simply look for the gray weathered look or insect holes.

NOTE: Minnesota State law requires all log replacement to be done by a licensed contractor. For such jobs we work with a licensed associate that we have trained to do this type of work.
